Evident returns to focus on the small and scientifically beautiful

One of the world’s best known photomicrography competitions, Evident’s Image of the Year, is inviting entries for 2026.
Contestants can upload up to three images of their work for the annual contest, billed as a celebration of art, science, and technical mastery”.
One global and three regional prizes will be awarded to the entries receiving the highest scores from an expert panel of judges assessing artistic and visual aspects, scientific impact and microscope proficiency.
The overall 2026 winner will receive an Evident SZX7 stereo microscope with a DP23 digital camera or Evident UPLXAPO Objectives. Prizes also include an Evident CX23 upright microscope or SZ61 stereo microscope for the regional winners in Asia, Europe and the Americas.
An additional prize of an SZ61 stereo microscope will be awarded to the winner of the dedicated category for materials science and engineering images.
Geoff Williams, manager of Brown University’s Leduc BioImaging Facility; Harini Sreenivasappa, microscopy facility manager of Drexel University Cell Imaging Center; Wen-Tai Chiu, professor in the National Cheng Kung University Department of Biomedical Engineering; Zurich University’s light microscopy application specialist Eliska Macickova; Ben Dubin-Thaler, founder and executive director of BioBus; and Jung Weon Lee, professor in the Department of Pharmacy at Seoul National University.
Originally launched in 2017 as the Image of the Year European Life Science Light Microscopy Award, the competition was run previously by Evident’s predecessor, Olympus Corporation.
In 2023 Olympus’s microscopy and digital imaging arm was spun off to form Evident Corporation, which assumed responsibility for the annual contest.
