Future Labs Live is a network of events across three continents and Basel is its centrepiece.
While analytica in Germany is by far the single largest laboratory show, Future Labs Live probably boasts one of the most comprehensive global footprints.
This year alone, it is due to stage events across three continents, with a presence in Europe, including the UK (London Lab Live, see opposite page), the USA and Asia. The centrepiece event though is Basel, which at the time of going to print is due to play host to 3,000 attendees, 200 speakers, 100 exhibitors and 100 start-ups... and counting.
It bills itself as ‘digital, automated, connected: building the structure of the automated lab’. This is reflected in its main conference theme groupings which are: AI; automation; data analytics/ management; digital transformation; facilities (real estate and cleanroom); lab operations; sustainability; and training and development.
While the physical tools of laboratory science are of central importance, Future Labs Live brings a focus on the transformation of laboratory infrastructure and the integration of digital strategy. So, an emphasis on how to integrate technology into operations, rather than simply what to purchase.
In essence, the Intelligent Lab and the roadmap required to achieve it, in areas such as:
- Digitalisation and connectivity – for example, transitioning from manual transcription to machine-readable methods and end-to-end workflow orchestration.
- Automation and robotics – scaling repetitive industrial protocols and reducing the automation gap in academic settings.
- Sustainability and Net Zero – considering practical strategies for reducing carbon footprints and implementing green lab design without losing scientific excellence.
- AI and machine learning – looking at leveraging big data and predictive modelling for R&D decision-making.
The fact that FLL is industry agnostic means it draws in a wide range of sectors including pharma, biotech, materials science, food and beverage, agriculture, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and more.
There’s also emphasis on bricks and mortar with space devoted to real estate and laboratory design, while the technologies aspect offers a significant platform for innovation, start-ups and appropriately given its future focus, the disruptive technologies likely to shape labs going forward.
Another significant aspect of Future Labs Live is networking and knowledge share. Its history and location make the event a draw for Europe’s major players but also key players from further afield.
