Urenco is to support the Royal Institution (Ri) in its efforts to expand its Young Scientist Centre to reach a wider audience, including the most deprived areas of the country.
The institution and the uranium enrichment services company will develop a themed workshop for the renamed Urenco Young Science Centre (UYSC), to boost school students’ understanding of physics, focusing on sustainable energy and nuclear science.
Their plan is to enable around 12,000 young people between the ages of seven and 18 to become ‘scientists for the day’, based at the centre’s laboratory near the Ri’s London headquarters.
Urenco CEO Boris Schucht said: “Our collaboration is more than just educational – it reflects a shared commitment to sustainability, and opportunity, with a particular focus on engaging under-privileged groups.”
Ri director Katherine Mathieson said the work would continue to extend the Centre’s reach, further inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers.
Meanwhile, the Royal Institution’s Mayfair home in Mayfair is to undergo multi-million-pound environmental works to reduce the building’s carbon footprint, with the aid of £4.35 million in funding from the Mayor of London's office.
Planning permission has been granted by Westminster City Council, with the completed work expected to result in initial reductions to carbon emissions of 35%.
