Brains of patients with bipolar disorder

Researchers at the University of Iowa discovered previously unrecognised differences in the brains of patients with bipolar disorder by applying a different type of MRI imaging.
This sensitive MRI technique can detect by-products of cell metabolism, including levels of glucose and acidity. The T1rho MRI scans displayed brain regions of elevated signal in the 15 participants with bipolar disorder compared to the 25 participants who did not suffer from bipolar disorder. The primary regions of difference are the cerebral white matter coloured in yellow and the cerebellum presented in red.
