A new research hub for nuclear energy research has opened at the University of Bristol.
A new research hub for nuclear energy research has opened at the University of Bristol.
The South West Nuclear Hub will aim to improve nuclear energy related research and teaching. The centre will also help support delivering the Government’s strategy on low-carbon energy.
Co-director of the South West Nuclear Hub, Professor Tom Scott, said: “Our objective is for the Hub to become an internationally recognised centre for nuclear research and education. It will bring academic and industrial expertise together in an exciting multidisciplinary environment to address some of the major engineering, scientific and societal challenges related to civil nuclear power generation.”
The nuclear hub builds on the previous success of the Bristol-Oxford Nuclear Research Centre (NRC), a virtual centre for nuclear fusion and fission, established in 2011. It will be open to both UK and international nuclear researchers. Founded by the NRC, its membership includes other regional universities and industrial partners.
Professor Scott said: “Through a Masters teaching programme, the Hub will deliver the skills required by the next generation of the UK’s nuclear plant operators, regulators and supply chain.”
It will look to engineer solutions and technologies to contribute to energy safety and security, in areas such as future nuclear technologies, decommissioning and waste management.
Support has been provided by a number of industry and government organisations such as EDF Energy, Sellafield Ltd, Horizon Nuclear Power and the Higher Education Funding Council for England.
